The Chandler Youth Academy is a one-week program for youth between the ages of 12-17. The academy provides an opportunity for the youth to learn about various jobs and functions within the Chandler Police Department. Officers from the Traffic Unit, Patrol Division, Bike Team, K-9, Community Resources and Training Section instruct students. Students get involved with hands-on activities which provides them with a valuable learning experience and insight into police procedures, such as use of force, forensics, crime scene investigation and much more.

The Youth Academy was developed to provide awareness and understanding of the role of law enforcement. The ultimate goal of the Youth Academy is to foster relationships that will bridge the gaps between law enforcement and youth while exposing them to a possible future career in law enforcement.

The Youth Academy is held one week during the Chandler Unified School District’s intersessions (October, March) and in the summer June and July. The Academy meets at the Chandler Police Department’s Main Station located at 250 E. Chicago Street and runs Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

There is no charge for the Academy and lunch is provided. Space is limited and parents must register their child.

Every year during the second week of April, the telecommunications personnel in the public safety community, are honored. This week-long event, initially set up in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California, is a time to celebrate and thank those who dedicate their lives to serving the public. It is a week that should be set aside so everyone can be made aware of their hard work and dedication.

The Return Me Safe program is a community resource service provided by the Chandler Police Department for members of the vulnerable population community who work, live, go to school, or receive treatment within the City of Chandler. This would include, but not be limited to, children or adults who suffer from: Autism Down Syndrome Dementia Alzheimer’s

This program will provide parents and caretakers with a mechanism to share crucial information with police officers who are responding to calls for service involving these individuals. Information on the vulnerable person, their parent(s) or responsible caretaker, and another safe contact person will be collected through the form below. A current photograph of the registered individual is requested to assist in locating the registered person, if he or she is ever missing.

Responsible persons who wish to register someone in this service; please understand registration can take up to six weeks for information to be made available to officers. Police officers will only be able to access this information when able to do so safely. Considerations of weapons, officer safety, and speed at which factors are changing must be considered on a case by case basis. Furthermore, this service will ONLY be readily accessible to Chandler police officers.

The Chandler Police Department utilizes School Resource Officers (SROs) at middle, junior high and high schools that are located in the city limits, covering three separate school districts: Chandler Unified, Kyrene Unified and Mesa Public Schools. The Chandler Police Department would like to announce an arrest has been made in the murder of 84-year-old Shivaswamy Hosakote. On August 18, 2016, Shivaswamy was found deceased inside his vehicle in the parking lot of the LA Fitness located at 2100 North Dobson Road. Investigators learned Shivaswamy had sustained multiple stab wounds.

On February 28, 2017, 24-year-old Freddis Williams III was arrested for the murder of Shivaswamy Hosakote. Mr. Williams, a Phoenix resident, was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on one count of 2nd Degree Murder.
