The Chandler Police Department offers an array of specialty opportunities which are available after only three years of service, such as Detective, Motors, K-9, School Resource Officer, and Bikes to name a few. Officers are eligible to test for the rank of sergeant after three years of service as well.

The Chandler Youth Academy is a one-week program for youth between the ages of 12-17. The academy provides an opportunity for the youth to learn about various jobs and functions within the Chandler Police Department. Officers from the Traffic Unit, Patrol Division, Bike Team, K-9, Community Resources and Training Section instruct students. Students get involved with hands-on activities which provides them with a valuable learning experience and insight into police procedures, such as use of force, forensics, crime scene investigation and much more.

The Youth Academy was developed to provide awareness and understanding of the role of law enforcement. The ultimate goal of the Youth Academy is to foster relationships that will bridge the gaps between law enforcement and youth while exposing them to a possible future career in law enforcement.

The Youth Academy is held one week during the Chandler Unified School District’s intersessions (October, March) and in the summer June and July. The Academy meets at the Chandler Police Department’s Main Station located at 250 E. Chicago Street and runs Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

There is no charge for the Academy and lunch is provided. Space is limited and parents must register their child.

FIREWORKS LAWS IN ARIZONA

Arizona law regulates when and where fireworks can be bought, sold and used in the state. The law was recently revised to create uniformity among all cities and towns.

* The sale of permissible consumer fireworks is allowed from May 20 through July 6 and December 10 through January 3.

* The use of permissible consumer fireworks is allowed June 24 through July 6 and December 24 through January 3 on private property, with the permission of the property owner.

The use of permissible consumer fireworks is PROHIBITED on all publicly owned or managed land, buildings and facilities, including but not limited to:

* City offices and facilities
* Public park
* Public parking lots
* Public school buildings and facilities
* Public retention basins
* Roads
* Streets and sidewalks.

The law does not apply to novelty items: snappers, snap caps, glow worms, snakes, party poppers, toy smoke devices and sparklers, which have always been considered permissible.

Permissible fireworks include: cylindrical and cone fountains, illuminating torches, wheels, ground spinners, flitter sparklers, ground sparkling devices.

The use of fireworks may be restricted in certain areas if a Federal or State agency implements Stage One Fire Restrictions.

The Chandler Fire Department encourages residents to use caution when storing, handling and using fireworks, and when in the vicinity of other people using fireworks. The CFD also encourages residents to attend one of the spectacular public fireworks displays staged by professionals, such as the annual display at Tumbleweed Park, instead of using fireworks at home.

The Chandler Police Department recognized the exceptional efforts of its volunteers during 2013 at its Annual Awards Volunteer Appreciation Banquet. Department employees and volunteers gathered on the evening of April 2, 2014 to Celebrate Chandler's Volunteers in Policing Program.

The Chandler Police Department and the community as a whole have benefited from the dedication and service given by the members of the Volunteers in Policing Program. Over 690 members from the Chandler community have volunteered their time to serve as a part of the organization.

Every year during the second week of April, the telecommunications personnel in the public safety community, are honored. This week-long event, initially set up in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California, is a time to celebrate and thank those who dedicate their lives to serving the public. It is a week that should be set aside so everyone can be made aware of their hard work and dedication.

Thank you, again, for all the sacrifices you make to create a better and safer world for the public. Your commitment to your profession is appreciated.
